Brief History of Vallecito, CA
This little town (actually Vallecito means little valley in Spanish) really should have been named Murphys. Located on highway 4, just down the road from Murphys, this town is where the Murphy brothers first began mining, before moving to what is now called Murphys and starting their Mercantile business. Vallecito was another of the super-rich centers of the gold rush in Calaveras County in the early 1850s. Actually, one of the biggest deposits of gold was found running right through the center of the town of Vallecito. The post office in Vallecito was established in 1854 and is still in use today.
