Brief History of Ventura County, CA
Ventura County was formed in 1873 from Santa Barbara County. The area was described as “the land of everlasting summers” by the early Spanish settlers. They named the region “San Buenaventura”, which means “good fortune”. It wasn’t until 1849 that a constitution was adopted for this territory. This territory was the southern part of Santa Barbara country and did not receive it’s name until after the constitution approved it as a county.
Before Ventura County became a county, there was the Mexican-American War. The war began in 1846 and it did not effect what is now Ventura County until 1847. Captain John C. Fremont had gone south to sign the Tready of Cahuenga with General Andres Pico. California was formally transferred to the United States in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
