James J., Thomas J. Furlong and John B. Leonis -founders on the city of Vernon. Incorporated and founded in 1905, the city of Vernon is located in the county of Los Angeles. James J. and Furlong were both ranchers and Leonis was both a rancher and merchant who resided in Southern California in 1880 in order to work for his uncle. Leonis’s uncle, by the name of Miguel Leonis, had an adobe dwelling that is now historic property in the city of Los Angeles. The name “ Vernon” originated from a dirt road called Vernon Avenue. The city of Vernon was originally an “exclusive industrial” area.
