Brief History of Wallace, CA
Located on highway 12 in Northern California, Calaveras County, just east of Burson and within walking distance to the Camanche reservoir is the unincorporated town of Wallace, California. It currently has a population of just over 200 people. Wallace was named for a famous surveyor in the area: John Wallace. Like everyone else in the 1850s, John Wallace came to the area to seek his fortune in the Gold fields of Calaveras County. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a very good miner and he ended up returning to his first love—surveying. As is typical for the area, most of the residents are descendents of German or Irish gold miners.
