Brief History of Walnut Grove, CA
South of Sacramento just off of U.S. Highway 5 is the city of Walnut Grove. It is the only city on the Sacramento river that is on both banks of the river at the same time. Walnut Grove, in Sacramento County, was founded as an agricultural town in the mid 1800s by John Sharp. It was known for its rich forests, and as a good shipping and steamboat stop. For a long time the only way to get from one side of the river to the another was to take a ferry. However, in 1916 a bridge was built to accommodate the cross river traffic. There are less than 1,000 people living in Walnut Grove.
