Brief History of Watts, CA

The history of Watts begins after the arrival of the Spanish-Mexican settlers. The area now known as Watts was originally part of the Rancho La Tajuata, a land grant in 1820. After the arrival of White Americans, the La Tajuaga land was sold off and subdivided for smaller farms and homes. Watts became more established after the development of the railroad and in 1907 Watts incorporated as a separate city. Then in 1926 Watts voted to annex itself to Los Angeles. Watts was named after a land owner and civic leader, Charles H. Watts.
