Brief History of Westmorland, CA
Located between Calipatria and Brawley in Imperial County is the city of Westmorland, California. It is known as the Gateway City to Imperial Valley. Compared to cities like El Centro and Brawley that are celebrating their 100 th anniversaries, Westmorland is a relatively new city, being founded in 1934. Approximately 2,200 people live in Westmorland. In the early years, Westmorland had a bit of a seedy reputation, centering around illegal gambling activities. Now, those activities are gone and the city is becoming known as transportation byway for NAFTA business, as it connects with the Mexican border town of Mexicali, and its California counterpart Calexico. Westmorland sits on many active faults and earthquakes are frequent in this little town.
