Brief History of Wilmington, CA
Wilmington , which began as New San Pedro, was founded in September of 1858. Wilmington was one of the first towns established in Los Angeles County after California became a state. A man named Phineas Banning brought passengers and cargo along for a new beginning. Within years the town grew and became more established. In 1863, the California Legislature officially changed the town’s name to Wilmington, after Phineas Banning’s birthplace of Wilmington, Delaware. In 1864, the second post office in Los Angeles County was established in Wilmington and served an area from Compton south and from Redondo Beach to Santa Ana.
