Brief History of Winton, CA
Winton California started by being called Winfield. However, the Santa Fe railroad already had one Winfield on its line so they go the town to change the name to Winton. It is located just off of California highway 99, a little north of Atwater, and west of the (now closed) Castle Air Force base. Winton, in Merced County has a population of just under 9,000 people, and frankly, not expected to grow significantly. Its dubious claim to fame was when Johnny Carson read an article on the air in the 1970s noting that Winton had the highest crime rate in the nation, for a town of its size.
