Brief History of Yolo County, CA-
When California became a state in 1850 Yolo County was one of the original 27 counties. The naming of “Yolo” may be derived from an Indian word “yo-lo” wich means “abounding in the rushes”. People believe that it is the name “Yodo” was named by the chief of the local tribe Yodoi.
In the late 1830’s the first recorded contact with Westerners occurred in Yolo County. The contacts included Spanish Missionaries as well as hunters and trappers. William Gordon was the first white settler who received a land grant in 1842 from the Mexican government.
