Brief History of Yountville, CA
Located on California Highway 29, east of Santa Rosa in Napa County is Yountville, an incorporated city of approximately 3,000 people. In the early 1800s the Yountville area was owned by Mexico. George Yount received a land grant from the Mexican government, one of the first land grants to a non-Mexican citizen in the Napa area. At first, the town was called Caymus Rancho, but after Yount’s death in 1867 the town was renamed Yountville in his honor. Like the rest of Napa Valley, Yountville is known for its wine. In fact the first grapes were planted here in the mid 1800 by the town’s founders. Now, Yountville is famous for its great restaurants.It is home to the only Michelin 3 star restaurant in Northern California (“The French Laundry”) and has two one star restaurants (Bouchon and Redd), a remarkable achievement for a town of this size. It is unofficially known as the “culinary capital of Napa Valley”.
