Brief History of Colorado-
The region known as Colorado was accepted into the Union as the 38 th state, on August 1, 1876. Although Colorado may be considered to be a part of the Western and Southwestern regions, the state of Colorado lies in the Rocky Mountain region of the country. Various Native American tribes were the original inhabitants of the area. The Lindenmeier Site in Larimer County contains artifacts dating from approximately 11200 BCE.
In 1858, the discovery of gold brought an increase to Colorado towns, such as Auraria and Denver City. Just as local governments were established by the towns and camps, the movement began toward a territorial and a subsequent state government. Colorado's largest cities include Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Lakewood, and Fort Collins. Denver, the largest city, is also the State’s capital. Colorado's nickname is “the Centennial State.”
