Brief History of Connecticut-

The Mohegan tribe was the first to inhabit Connecticut. Although the Dutch were the first to explore Connecticut, in 1633 English Puritans from Massachusetts were the first permanent settlements. Connecticut is part of the thirteen original colonies. It became the fifth state to join the Union on January 9, 1788. Connecticut was nicknamed “the Constitution State” due to its proclamations it the Fundamental Orders of 1639.

Due to limited land people in Connecticut had to quickly turn to manufacturing, although agriculture and trade were the primary activities of the 17 th century. Today, farming is still an important factor, although it doesn’t hold its once prominent position anymore. The most important crops that are grown in Connecticut are dairy, poultry, forest and nursery, tobacco, vegetables and fruit.

Forested hills, new urban skylines, and shoreline beaches are situated in Connecticut. Western Reserve lands is the name for the Connecticut lands that extend across northern Ohio. The top five Connecticut cities with the largest populations, in descending order, include Bridgeport (139,529), New Haven (123,529), Hartford (121,578), Stamford (117,083), Waterbury (107,271). The city of Hartford has been Connecticut’s capital since 1875.
