Brief History of Delaware-
The Spaniards and Portuguese were the first to explore Delaware in the sixteenth century. Some of these explorers include: Henry Hudson in 1609, Samuel Argall in 1610, Conrelius May in 1613, and Cornelius Hendricksen in 1614. Argall sailed into a strange bay and named it after his governor, Lord De La Warr. The first white settlement on Delaware soil, occurred 11 years after the landing of the English pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusettes.
Dover was founded as the court town for newly established Kent County in 1683 by William Penn, the Proprietor of the territory generally known as the "Lower Counties on the Delaware." Many rallies, troop reviews, and other patriotic events took place in The Green, Dover’s central square. The Green remains the heart of Dover's historic district and is the location of the Delaware Supreme Court and the Kent County Courthouse. In 1758 the town of Newark officially established after receiving a charter from George II of Great Britain. During the Revolutionary War, British and American forces clashed outside Newark at Battle of Cooch’s Bridge in Delaware. The Battle of Cooch's Bridge is believed by some to be the first battle at which the Stars and Stripes was flown.
