Brief History of Florida-
Earthquakes in Florida are rare because there aren’t any tectonic plate boundaries near the state. But in January 1879, there was a shock near St Augustine, Florida. The effects were also felt 50 miles south where Daytona Beach is located. The tremor reaches Tampa and even as far north as Savanna, Georgia. Key West, Florida experienced various shock waves, in January 1880. These shock waves came from two large earthquakes in Cuba.
Britton Hill is the highest point in Florida and the lowest highpoint of any U.S. state. Britton Hill is approximately 345 feet above mean sea level. The state south of Orlando is low-lying and fairly leveled. Clearwater on the other hand feature vistas that rise 50 to 100 feet above the water.
On June 29, 1931 was the hottest day ever recorded in Monticello with a temperature of 109 °Ft. The coldest was on February 13, 1899, just 25 miles in Tallahassee. The recorded temperature was – 2 °F. Snow in Florida is extremely rare. During the Great Blizzard of 1899, Florida experienced blizzard conditions; the Tampa Bay area had "gulf-effect" snow, similar to lake-effect snow.
Metropolitan areas in the state form a band on the east coast of Florida. This band stretches from the Jacksonville MSA to the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach MSA. This includes every county on the east coast of Florida, except for Monroe County. From Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSA to the Naples-Marco Island MSA, is where the band of MSAs on the west coast of the peninsula continues. All of the coastal counties from Hernando County to Collier County are included in the band. The largest metropolitan area in the state as well as the entire southeastern United States is the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area, with over five million people.
Duval County is consolidated with the city of Jacksonville. Therefore reports show only 66 counties in Florida, instead of 67. Florida has 379 cities that report regularly to the Florida Department of Revenue.
