Brief History of Georgia-
On June 9, 1732, King George II granted charter to General James Oglethorpe and a group 20 friends, which were organized as trustees, to establish a colony named for the king. Oglethorpe’s concern about poverty and the unemployment in England motivated him to help the poor from the harsh conditions they were living in. Another plus in founding this colony would hopefully increase trade and wealth and provide an assistance for South Carolina against attacks from the Spanish, the French, and the Indians.
The Royal Charter for the colony of Georgia was officially certified on June 9, 1732. Roughly about 114 passengers left Gravesend, England on the Anne, which was a 200 ton frigate which was commanded by Captain John Thomas. Due to the capacity of the ship, it was extremely crowded but as for the voyage, it went very smoothly. Even though with the crowd, people became sick and because of the sicknesses spreading, two children died on the trip but the captain was the one who stayed quite healthy. A baby, Georgius Warren, was christened on the 12 th of November and the passengers made a special dinner for Oglethorpe’s birthday on Christmas. Finally on January 13, 1733, the company sighted Charles Town, South Carolina.
Oglethorpe gave a copy of the Georgia Charter to the Governor of South Carolina. In 1734, a scribe made another copy but South Carolina sadly gave it to Georgia in 1965, more than 200 years later. Since Georgia has a celebration called Georgia Day, the 1734 Charter is displayed by the Secretary of State’s Office in the State Capital.
On January 30 th, Georgia settlers left South Carolina in small boats and traveled 17 miles up the Savannah River which led them to land on Yamacraw Bluff. Oglethorpe’s first official act was to kneel with the company to offer thanksgiving and prayer to God. That same night, four large tents were built and Olgethorpe was busy laying out land lots for Savannah. Georgia Close, the first child in the colony Georgia, was born on March 17 but unfortunately she passed away just after 10 months. During the first year of living, in was very difficult to cope with each other but people managed to build houses that summer. Pure water was lacking, illnesses spread due to the muggy climate, and many citizens in Georgia were dying. Fortunately for Georgia, the colony received some assistance form South Carolina and the Yamacraw Indians.
