Brief History of Hawaii-

Although evidence proves that the Spanish and maybe the Irish were the first to visit Hawaii, 1778 was the first recorded contact with Hawaii by a British explorer name, James Cook. Hawaii is one of three U.S. States that were independent prior to becoming part of the U.S. The Kingdom of Hawaii existed from 1810 until 1893. Native born Hawaiians with American ancestry overthrew the monarchy. Hawaii remained an independent republic between 1894 and 1898. In 1900 Hawaii was annexed by the U.S. Then in 1959 Hawaii officially became a state.

There are certain population centers that exist where they do today, due to the movement of the royal family from the island of Hawaii to Maui. Kamemhamha lll chose Honolulu, the largest city in Hawaii, as the capital of his kingdom.

The volcanic activity and subsequent erosion created impressive geological features. All of the Hawaiian islands were formed by volcanos erupting from the sea floor. The last volcanic eruption outside the Big Island occurred at Haleakala on Maui in the late 18th century. Only volcanoes on the southern half of the Big Island of Hawaii, and the Loihi Seamount deep below the waters off its southern coast and are presently active. Loihi is the newest volcano to form.
