Brief History of Kansas-

Kansas is located in an area often referred to as the “American Heartland.” It is also known as the central region of the country. A river which flows through the state was named Kansas after a tribe named Kansa which once inhabited the area. Resulting in the official state name, Kansas. The state’s residents are referred to as “Kansans.” It is often said that the meaning of Kansas is “people of the wind” or “people of the south wind.” Indiana began to first settle in the 1830’s by European Americans. It wasn’t until 1854 that the U.S. government officially opened to settlement. Kansas had to determine whether it would be a free or slave state after pro-slavery and abolitionist Free-Staters quickly rushed to the territory.

Barton County is where the geographic center of the state is located. Osborne County is the location used, until 1983, as the central reference point for all maps of North America produced by the U.S. government.

Due to the numerous counties and county seats, Kansas has the second largest state highway system in the nation. California has the first. Texas would come first if the Farm to Market Roads of Texas counted.

US Route 69 runs north and south, from Minnesota to Texas. The highway passes through the eastern section of Kansas, from the Kansas City area, through Louisburg, Fort Scott, Frontenac, Pittsburg, and Baxter Springs before entering Oklahoma.
