Brief History of Maine-

After the Revolution, settlers pressed for the separation from Massachusettes because they resented being ruled by Boston. At the time, political power was held by coastal merchants. The separation movement resisted until the War of 1812. That is when Massachusetts showed that it was unable or unwilling to provide adequate protection for the people of the district against British raids. Congress established Maine as the 23rd state under the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Maine officially joined the Union as a free state. At the time free and slave states preserved a numerical balance after a year later, Missouri joined as a slave state.

Maine selected Portland as its capital, but it was only temporary. In 1832 the capital was moved to Augusta. 20 percent of Maine’s population is populated in the Greater Portland metropolitan area. Kennebec County, near Mount Vernon, holds the mean population center. The 6 th largest city in the state, Biddeford, is also the largest city in York county. Biddeford is home the University of New England and the annual La Kermesse Franco-Americaine Festival.

In 1628, Thomas Purchase and other fishermen settled in Brunswick, the largest city in Maine. They called this area by its Indian name, Pejepscot. Pejepscot means “the long, rocky rapids part of the river.” Pejepscot was burned and abandoned during King Philip’s War in 1676. The only thing that brought peace between the Abenaki Indians and English settlements was the Treaty of Portsmouth of 1713.
