Brief History of Maryland-

Maryland was named after Henrietta Maria, who was the wife of King Charles I. In 1632 he gave the second Lord Baltimore, Cecil Calvert, the property charter of Maryland. There is a county in Maryland, Anne Arundel County, that was name after Cecil’s wife. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Arundell, first Baron Arundell of Wardour. Anne and Cecil had nine children throughout their marriage and one which became the third Lord of Baltimore.

Maryland is situated in the area known as the Mid Atlantic region of the country. Being part of the Chesapeake Bay Colony, Maryland was also where planters cultivated tobacco as a cash crop dependent on slave labor. As of August 2007, Maryland is the wealthiest state in the country. The state that previously held that title was New Jersey.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Maryland has a median household income of $65,144.

The first general to die fighting for American Independence was Richard Montgomery, who honorably has Montgomery County named after him. In September, 1776 Thomas Sprigg Wootton, delegate from Frederick County to the Maryland legislature introduced a bill "that after the first day of October next, such part of the said county of Frederick as is contained within the bounds and limits following, to wit: Beginning at the east side of the mouth of Rock Creek in Maryland, on the Potomac river, and running thence with the said river to the mouth of Monocacy, then with a straight line to Parr's Spring, from thence with the lines of the county to the beginning, shall be, in and hereby erected into a new county called Montgomery County."

Although its legal origin remains unknown, Baltimore County has existed since January 12, 1659/60. Its name derives from the Proprietary’s Barony in Ireland in the county of Longford.
