Brief History of Michigan-

Due to its shape, the Lower Peninsula of Michigan is known as, “the mitten.” The Lower and Upper Peninsula are separated by the straits of Mackinac, a five mile wide channel that connects Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. Michigan is the only state to consist entirely of two peninsulas.

Michigan has the longest freshwater shoreline in the world, this is due to the bounding between four of the five Great Lakes that border Michigan from east to west. Behind California and Florida, Michigan ranked third for the highest number of recreation boaters. A person in Michigan is never more than six miles from a natural water source.

North of Detroit, in Oakland County is where some of Michigan’s wealthiest communities are located. Grosse Pointe is home to another well known wealthy community in Michigan. Barton hills is the richest city in Michigan, with a per capita of $100,683, while Benton Harbor is the poorest, with a per capita of $8,965. Michigan’s capital, Lansing, is the location of the three branches of state government. Since 1879 it has hosted the state’s executive and legislative branches.
