Brief History of Minnesota-

Minnesota Territory was formed on March 3, 1849 and was admitted into the Union as the 32 nd state on May 11, 1858, after being carved out of the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory. Since 1849, St. Paul has been Minnesota’s capital. It lies in east-central Minnesota along the banks of the Mississippi River. Being known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” Minnesota offers residents and tourist a numerous types of outdoor recreational get-aways. Some of which includes other waters, forests, and parks.

Anishinaabe, the Dakota, and other Native Americans populated Minnesota before any European settlement. The first Europeans to arrive in the 1600’s were French fur traders. Tensions were caused later in that century between the Ojibwe and the Sioux, after the Ojibwe migrated westward to Minnesota. Minnesota was mapped out by various explorers such as Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, Father Louis Hennepin, Jonathan Carver, Henry Schoolcraft, and Joseph Nicollet, among many more.

The Second Treaty of Paris was signed at the end of the Revolutionary War. Thus resulting in the annexation between the United States and Minnesota’s portion east of the Mississippi River. Although a portion of the Red River Valley was disputed until the Treaty of 1818; the land west of the Mississippi River was acquired by the Louisiana Purchase. The construction of Fort Snelling followed between 1819 and 1825. After Zebulon Pike bargained with Native Americans to obtain the convergence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers. Minneapolis grew following the construction of the first water-powered industry, in Saint Anthony Falls, which included a grist mill and a sawmill. During this time many settled in the area but, in 1839, the Army forced people to move downriver where they settled in the area known as St. Paul.
