Brief History of Mississippi-
The first major European expedition into the territory that became Mississippi was that of Hernando de Soto, who passed through in 1540. Fort Maurepas was the first settlement at Ocean Springs, settled by Pierre Le Moyne d'lberville in April 1699. In 1716, Natchez was founded on the Mississippi River. In this area, it became the dominant town and trading post of the area. In 1763, Mississippi spent some time under Spanish, British, and French nominal jurisdiction. The Mississippi area was deeded to the British after the French and Indian War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris.
Territory that was ceded by Georgia and South Carolina was used to organize the territory of Mississippi on April 7, 1798. Mississippi was expanded twice due to disputed territory claimed by both the U.S. and Spain. Throughout 1800's, land was being purchased from Native American tribes. Mississippi was the 20th state admitted to the Union, on December 10, 1817. Jackson is Mississippi's state capital and the largest city. Mississippi got its name because of the Mississippi River, which flows along its western boundary.
The first bottling of Coca-Cola occured in Vicksburg, Mississippi, at the Biedenham Candy Company is 1891. Edward Adolf Barq was the inventor of Barq's Root Beer and this happened in 1898 in Biloxi. The Teddy bear gets its name from President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, because of a 1902 hunting trip to Sharkey County, Mississippi, in which he refused to shoot a captured bear. Burnita Shelton Matthews from near Hazlehurst, Mississippi was the first woman appointed as a judge of a U.S. district court. Harry S. Truman appointed her on October 21, 1949.
Mississippi's towns of gambling included the Gulf Coast towns of Bay St. Louis, Gulfport and Biloxi, and the Mississippi River towns of Tunica, Greenville, Vicksburg and Natchez. Mississippi was the second largest gambling state in the Union, after Nevada and ahead of New Jersey but tragically the Gulf Coast was struck by Hurricane Katrina. On October 17, 2005, Governor Haley Barbour signed a bill into law that now allows casinos in Hancock and Harrison counties to rebuild on land. Harrison County is the only exception where the new law states that casinos can be built to the southern boundary of U.S. Route 90.
