Brief History of Missouri-
Missouri ’s four largest urban areas are, in descending order, St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, and Columbia. The capital of Missouri is Jefferson City. Branson is a major tourist attraction in the Ozarks of southwestern Missouri. Missouri became the Missouri Territory after it was acquired from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Then in 1821, as part of the Missouri Compromise, Missouri became a slave state and was the 24 th state admitted into the Union.
Missouri was the starting point and return destination of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. It is then that it inevitably became known as the “Gateway to the West.” River traffic and trade along the Mississippi became an essential part of Missouri’s economy. After flooding became uncontainable, the state worked on the construction of 140 miles of levees on the Mississippi. The construction of the levees eventually completed in 1860.
Missouri’s largest metropolitan area is located in St. Louis. The metropolitan area includes seventeen other countries, in which eight of them are located in the state of Illinois. Some of the major cities making up the St. Louis Metro area in Missouri include: St. Charles, St. Peters, Florissant, Chesterfield, Creve Coeur, Maryland Heights, O'Fallon, Clayton, Ballwin, and University City.
Missouri’s largest city is Kansas City. Also, it is the principal city of the fifteen-county Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Independence, Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, Raytown, Liberty, and Gladstone are some of the few comprising cities in the Kansas City metro area in Missouri.
