Brief History of Montana-

Montana was originally inhabited by Native American tribes that scattered throughout the state. The Blackfeet, Assiniboine, and the Gros Ventres lived in the central and north central part of Montana. The south central region of Montana was home to the Crow tribe, while the Cheyenne resided in the southeast. Flathead Lake and the western mountains is where the smaller tribes lived, such as the Pend d’Oreille and the Kalispel.

Montana east of the continental divide was part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Subsequent to the Lewis and Clark expedition, Montana became a United States Territory on May 26, 1864 and it wasn’t until November 8, 1889 that it became the 41 st state to join the Union.

Montana has relied on railroads as a vital method of transportation since the 1800’s. Originally the railroad transportation system relied on the main lines of three east-west transcontinental routes: the Milwaukee Road, the Great Northern, and the Northern Pacific. The former Northern Pacific trackage is operated by the Montana Rail Link in the western region of the state. The Montana Rail Link is a privately held Class II railroad. Currently, Montana’s largest railroad is the BNSF Railway. Also, it is Montana’s main transcontinental route which incorporates the Great Northern main line across the state. In addition, Amtrak's Empire Builder train runs through the north of the state, stopping in the following towns: Libby, Whitefish, West Glacier, Essex, East Glacier Park, Browning, Cut Bank, Shelby, Havre, Malta, Glasgow, and Wolf Point.
