Brief History of New Jersey-
In 1787, New Jersey became the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and the first state to sign the Bill of Rights. Trenton officially became the state capital of New Jersey in 1790.
The Delaware Indians were the first to live on the land we now know as New Jersey. The name Delaware comes from the Algonquian dialect that they spoke, which means “original people” or “genuine people.” There were approximately 8,000 to 20,000 Delaware Indians in New Jersey when the first Europeans arrived. Although the Delaware Indians were considered one tribe, they live separately in small communities. The men hunted, while the women worked in the gardens growing squash, beans, corn, and sweet potatoes.
The city of Paterson grew and prospered during the Industrial Revolution. The economy had previously been largely agrarian, which was problematically subject to crop failures and poor soil. This resulted in the shift to a more industrialized economy, that based on manufactured commodities. Thomas Edison played a vital role in the Industrial Revolution, having been granted 1,093 patents. Many of those patents were developed while he worked in New Jersey. When steamboats were introduced to New Jersey, they brought beneficial improvements in transportation.
Just east of New Jersey Turnpike, in Milltown, in Middlesex County is where the center of population for New Jersey is located. New Jersey contains various famous casinos, many of them are situated along the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The Atlantic City Boardwalk is the longest throughout the Jersey Shore.
