Brief History of New Mexico-

Mogollon and Anasazi civilizations were the early inhabitants of New Mexico. Around the 15 th century the nomadic Navajo and Apache tribes arrived in New Mexico. Seeking gold, a Spanish expedition under Franciscan priest Marcos de Niza explored the area in 1539. The first white settlements in the region were at San Juan Pueblo, in 1598, and Santa Fe, in 1610. By 1800 Albuquerque, founded in 1706, had a population of more than 4,000. The Navajo, Comanche, Apache, and other nomadic people exposed the Spanish and Pueblo communities to continual raids.

In 1900 New Mexico had a Native American population of 134, 000. New Mexico is full of American Indian culture. Today, some members of the Apache and Ute tribe reside on federal reservations in the state. With 16 million acres, the reservation of the Navajo Nation ranks as the largest in the country. There are agricultural Pueblo Indians that live in various pueblos throughout the state. Many of those pueblos are older than any European settlement in New Mexico.

Amtrak's Southwest Chief passes through daily at stations in Gallup, Albuquerque, Lamy, Las Vegas, and Raton, offering connections to Los Angeles, Flagstaff, Kansas City, and Chicago. The only true transcontinental train in the United States, The Sunset Limited makes stops three times a week in Lordsburg, and Deming.
