Brief History of New York-

The early inhabitants of New York included the Mahican, Wappinger, Leni-Lenape, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca tribes. In 1524, the Italian explorer Giovanni de Verrazano entered the New York Bay. But European colonization did not begin until Henry Hudson, an English navigator, claimed he area for the Netherlands in 1609. The New Netherland colony, which suffered from the Indian attacks and mismanagement in its early years, achieved a measure of peace and economic stability under Peter Stuyvesant, who governed it from 1647 to 1664. In that later year, it was siezed by the English. James, duke of York, brother of King Charles II was honored and had a state named after him which was New York. James made New Jersey, which had been part of New Netherland, a separate colony and acquired eastern Long Island from Connecticut.

Ninety-two of the 300 or more engagements of the American Revolution were fought in New York, including the Battle of Bemis Heights-Saratoga (1777), which was the turning point of the war. At the conclusion of the war, New York returned to the agricultural pursuits and to developing its commercial activities. After opposition was overcome, New York entered the Union on July 26, 1788, as the 11th of the original 13 states. Under the new government, New York City became the first U.S. capital and the scene of George Washington's inauguration as president in 1789.

Between 1825 and the American Civil War, New York City emerged as the major manufacturing center in textile, the nation's cotton mart and a center for banking, imports, insurance, the stock exchange and ready-made clothing. Also during this period, transportation facilities developed rapidly, a network of turnpikes was introduced and railroad lines were constructed that extended from New York City to Chicago.
