Brief History of North Carolina-

North Carolina was originally known as Carolina. North Carolina was one of the original Thirteen Colonies and home of the first English colony in the Americas. North Carolina was the last of the Confederate states to secede from the Union on May 20, 1861. It was readmitted on July 4 th, 1868. Kill Devil near Kitty Hawk in 1903, was the location of the first successful controlled, powered and heavier-than-air flight by the Wright brothers.

North Carolina has to witness chaotic weather. Charlotte, North Carolina suffered severe damage in 1989 by Hurricane Hugo. It even reached as far as the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwestern part of the state. Hurricanes or tropical storms along the coastal plain produce many of the tornadoes in North Carolina. The mountains near the western piedmont often protect the area by breaking up storms as the attempt to cross over. This can weaken a storm, but can also lead to major ice events in the winter.

The Wilmington and Raleigh railroad connect the port city of Wilmington with North Carolina’s state capital, Raleigh. The construction of the railroad began on October 25, 1836.The North Carolina Railroad extended west to Greensboro, High Point, and Charlotte by act of the legislature in 1849. The stretch of the railroad was vital to the confederate war effort. War supplies were shipped into Wilmington and moved by rail through Raleigh to the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia.

According to the 1860 census, more than 330,000 people, or 33% of the population of 992,622 were enslaved African Americans. Eastern Tidewater is where they lived and worked on plantations. 30,463 free people lived in the eastern coastal plain of the state. In cities such as Wilmington and New Bern is where they resided and found access to a variety of jobs. In 1835 the state rescinded their suffrage and granted Free African Americans the right to vote.
