Brief History of North Dakota-

Both North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted into the Union on November 2, 1889. North Dakota is considered the 39 th stated due to alphabetical position. The name was taken from the Dakota or Sioux Indian Tribe.

Between 1879 and 1886 over 100,000 people migrated into the northern Dakota resulting in a settlement “boom”. Significant immigration in North Dakota commenced when the westbound Northern Pacific Railway was built to the Missouri River in 1872 and 1873.

The cities of Fargo and Bismarck began as rough and tumble railroad communities. The 1862 Federal Homestead Law caused the farming settlement to develop gradually. In 1861, when Dakota Territory was organized by congress the American settlement of the Northern Plains commenced earnest. The city of Grandin helped publicize the northern frontier.

Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks, and Minot are North Dakota cities with populations above 30,000. North Dakota’s most populous city is Fargo. In Wells County, near Sykeston, is where the center of the population is located. North Dakota has experienced a gradual rural decline, however migration has increased in urban centers.
