Brief History of Oklahoma-

Oklahoma derives from the Choctaw words okla and humma, which mean “land of the red man.” Its nickname is the Sooner State. Oklahoma was the 46 th state to join the Union on November 16, 1907. Oklahoma City is the state’s capital and largest city. Oklahoma was formed from Indian Territory.

Oklahoma relies on an economic base of aviation, energy, telecommunications, and biotechnology. Oklahoma is a major producer of natural gas, oil, and food. Oklahoma ranks third in per capital income growth. Tulsa and Oklahoma City are the state’s primary economic anchors.

Natural gas, aircraft, and food are an important production to Oklahoma. The state ranks second in the nation for production of natural gas, and is the 27th-most agriculturally productive state, ranking 5th in production of wheat.

Oklahoma 's largest cities in 2007 were: Oklahoma City (537,730), Tulsa (382,870), Norman (102,830), Broken Arrow (88,310), Lawton (87,540), Edmond (76,640), Midwest City (55,160), Moore (49,280), Enid (46,510), and Stillwater (44,820). Of the state's ten largest cities, three are outside the metropolitan areas of Oklahoma City and Tulsa, and only Lawton has a metropolitan statistical area of its own as designated by the United States Census Bureau, though the metropolitan statistical area of Fort Smith, Arkansas extends into the state.
