Brief History of Rhode Island-
Rhode Island is the smallest U.S. state by area. Most of the state is settled on the North American mainland, although its called Rhode Island in common usage. The official name for the Aquidneck Island is actually Rhode Island. Aquidneck Island is now composed of the city of Newport and the towns of Middletown and Portsmouth.
Providence is home to the headquarters of Citizens Financial Group, a 160 billion dollar banking corporation which operates throughout the nation. CVS and Textron, which are Fortune 500 companies, are based in Woonsocket and Providence. There are other Fortune 1,000 companies based in Rhode Island, including Nortek, Amica Mutual, FM Global, and many more. The Touro Synagogue, located in Rhode Island, was dedicated on December 2, 1763. It is considered to be the first synagogue within the United States.
Some Rhode Island cities are further partitioned into villages the reflect historic townships, which were later combined for administrative purposes. Rhode Island contains notable villages. One of them is Kingston, located in South Kingstown, which houses the University of Rhode Island. Wickford, in North Kingstown, is where the annual international art festival takes place.
