Brief History of South Carolina-
During the American Revolution South Carolina, originally known as Carolina, was one of the thirteen colonies to declare independence from the British Crown. South Carolina was part of the Confederate States and was the first to secede the Union. South Carolina is named after King Charles II. The state’s name derives from the word Carolus, which is Latin for Charles.
The coastline contains natural ports such as Georgetown and Charleston where there are many salt marshes and estuaries.
Some of the South Carolina bays tend to be oval and line up in a northwest to south west orientation. One theory suggest that a meteor shower created the coastal plain’s rare feature.
South Carolina 's center of population is located in Richland County, in the city of Columbia. Columbia is the state’s capital.
