Brief History of South Dakota-

South Dakota is a state located in the Midwestern region of the United States. An increase in population caused the Dakota Territory to be divided in half. This resulted in the statehood of North and South Dakota. November 2, 1889 is the date that South Dakota officially became the 40 th state to be admitted to the Union. South Dakota was named after the Lakota and Dakota (Sioux) American Indian tribes. The Missouri River divides the state into two socially and economically halves. A group of low, pine-covered mountains, known as the Black Hills, are located in the southwestern portion of South Dakota. Also, the Black Hills is the location of the famous Mt. Rushmore.

After the discovery of gold, along with many other Black Hills towns, Deadwood was founded after the discovery of gold, along with many other Black Hills towns. The city of Pierre is South Dakota’s capital. With a population of 150,000 people, South Dakota’s Sioux Falls is the largest city. South Dakota has one of the lowest population densities in the country. Sioux Falls and Yankton are two of eastern South Dakota’s largest cities that were founded by land speculators in 1856 and 1859.

The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is the location of the Wounded Knee Massacre the occurred on December 29, 1890. It has been known as the last major armed conflict between the U.S. and the Sioux Nation. Approximately 300 Sioux, and 25 U.S. soldiers were killed during the massacre. The Shannon, Jackson, and Bennett Counties are all situated within the reservation.

With Citibank moving its credit industry from New York to Sioux Falls in 1981, the financial service industry began to grow within South Dakota. In Lawrence County, near Lead, is where a new underground research facility will be opening up soon. Also this is the location of the recently closed Homestake gold mine. Many rural areas have been struggling with declining populations and the emigration of young adults to larger cities such as Rapid City, Sioux Falls and other cities in Minnehaha County.
