Brief History of Tennessee-
Tennessee became the sixteenth state to join the Union in 1796. The largest city in Tennessee is Memphis. In 1567, the Spanish explorer, Captain Juan Pardo and his men passed through a Native American village named “Tanasqui.” A Cherokee town named Tanasi or “Tanase” was later encountered by European settlers. That area is today known as Monroe County, Tennessee.
Tennessee has had three other capitals in the past, Knoxville, Kingston, and Murfresboro. Today, Tennessee’s capital is Nashville. Memphis has the largest population of any city in the state, but Nashville has had the state's largest metropolitan area since 1990. Some 45 miles northwest of Nashville is where the city of Clarksville is located, its the fifth significant population center. Chattanooga and Knoxville are located in the eastern part of the state near the Great Smoky Mountains. The center of population of Tennessee is located in Rutherford County, in the city of Murfreesboro.
