Brief History of Texas-
Texas is the second largest U.S. state by both area and population. The Dallas/ Fort Worth area is the largest metropolitan statistical area. Texas has close ties to the American South, partly due to settlement patterns and its membership in the Confederacy. Texas can also be classified as a Southwestern state because it was once a Spanish and Mexican possession. Texas was a part of Mexico until 1836. A European Country, Spain, was the first to claim Texas. In 1845 Texas joined the Union, as the 28 th state.
The discovery of oil in the early 1900s led to an economic boom, known as the “Oil Boom.” In 1972, the oil production reached an average of three million barrels of oil per day. The first major oil well in Texas was Spindletop, south of Beaumont. Texas has three cities with populations exceeding 1 million: Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas. This is the most cities of this size within one state. They are also a among the 10 largest cities of the U.S. Austin, Fort Worth and El Paso are among the top 25 largest U.S. cities. The Texas Urban Triangle region contains most of the state's largest cities and metropolitan areas, as well as nearly 75 percent of Texas's total population.
