Brief History of Vermont-
A Native American tribe named the Abenaki, of the Algonquin nation, were the first inhabitants of the area known as Vermont. The name Vermont derives from the French, which means “the green mountains.” The first European to discover Vermont was a French explorer named Samuel de Champlain. In 1724, the first English settlement was established along the Connecticut River at Fort Dummer, near Brattleboro. Vermont quickly opened to settlement in 1760 after peace was made with the French. Most of the new settlers came from Connecticut or Massachusetts.
Vermont’s admission into the federal Union began in 1791, following the declaration of Vermont as an independent republic on Junuary 17, 1777. The statehood of Vermont officially began on March 4, 1791, becoming the 14 th state admitted into the Union. For the first six months of the state’s existence, Vermont was called New Connecticut. Then on June 2, 1777, a second convention of 72 delegates met to adopt the name Vermont.
