Brief History of West Virginia-
West Virginia annually celebrates West Virginia Day on June 20 th. During the American Civil War, on June 20 1863, West Virginia officially separated from Virginia. Nevada and West Virginia were the only two states to form during the American Civil War.
West Virginia is full of diversity because of its surrounding states. The people in the Northern Panhandle and the North Central region feel kinship towards Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The residents in the Eastern Panhandle feel an affinity for the Washington, D.C. suburbs in Virginia and Maryland. People in the southern region of West Virginia consider themselves Southerners. The residents in the towns along the mid-Ohio River have an appearance and culture somewhat resembling the Midwest.
West Virginia’s center of population lies in the town of Gassaway, located in Braxton County. Charleston is the state’s capital and largest city in West Virginia. West Virginia is well known for its natural beauty and significant logging and coal mining industries. Also, there are numerous types of outdoor activities.
